Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): GX390, 13HP, ditch witch trencher, ditch witch, engine crankshaft

Question
Trying to start the pull rope tightens about one-third of the way out. Rope sometimes breaks. Boom stuck in the trench and would not start. After getting out, trencher started and got stuck in the trench again. Now, can not pull starter rope at all. Engine will not turn, acts as if it is froze. Boom is in down position.

Answer
A couple of options.  First, remove the spark plug.  Can you pull the rope?

If not, I would check the engine crankshaft output and dis-connect the belt or what ever is connected to the engine crankshaft output?  Can you pull the rope now?

If not, check the valves.  Are the clearances correct?

If the valves are alright I would remove the engine shroud and see if anything is binding.

The overall concept is to check to see if any exteral parts are binding/froze preventing the engine from turning.  Important to remove the spark plug and see if you can pull the rope.

It is possible something in the starter rope is broke and binding so check that as well.

Let me know what you find.
