Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Murray lawn tractor that will not start, murray lawn tractor, briggs and stratton

Question
I have a Murray lawn tractor model:42910x92A with a Briggs and Stratton 14.5hp that will not start properly. The solenoid, battery and starter tested good. I replaced the ignition switch. The blades are disengaged and foot on the clutch. When you turn the key it does nothing. If you go from the battery to the starter it will start right up and it turns off with the key. I need help getting it to start by turning the key. Thanks.

Answer
Most likely a safety switch preventing voltage from reaching the solenoid exciter post.

If you only have one small wire on the solenoid then this is the exciter wire.  When you turn the key to the start postion the exciter post should have 12 volts DC on it to close the solenoid. Of course, all the safety switches have to be in the correct position.

If there is no power on the exciter wire then nothing will happen.  Should have a neutral/transmission, seat and blade engagement safety switch.  Did you check them all?
