ANSWER: If you have spark and fuel and it refuses to start then the only 2 things left are compression and timing.

Have you ckecked the engine compression?  I would not worry about the compression level too much...just make sure there is some compression and a valve is not sticking.

You can hold you thumb over the spark plug hole and crank the engine to get a rough idea if there is compression.

QUESTION: there is compression......will not start

ANSWER: To recap, you have spark, compression but it still won't start even when priming with starting fluid sprayed directly into the carb?  If this is correct then you could have a timing problem but timing issues are rare in larger engines.

I forget, which engine do you have an what is the engine model, type/code and spec/serial number?

QUESTION: 782 cub cadet    kohler engine 2 cyl 17hp   17k

all true    did exactly what u said.......never had this problem before
it would always eventually start

Answer
Have you downloaded the sevice manual from Kohler's website?  Google Kohler engines to get to the site, then select Manuals and Maintenance.  Just select your hp, 17, and scroll down to the K17 service manual.

Go to page 34 and follow the procedure for Ignition Timing.

If it won't start by priming, you have spark and compression, then I would suspect a possible timing problem.
