Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): carby flooding, mikuni carb, pressure test

Question
QUESTION: I have a robin ex17 carby that i canot stop the fuel flow when tap on ? removed the bowl manualy lift the float and the fuel stops, put the bowl back on and still floods, even purchased a brand new carby andd it still does the same, is there something im missing here ?? ive been working on small engines for 30 years and this  has got me stumped, any sugestions on whats going on, or is a fault with these carbys ?

ANSWER: Is the fuel tank holding too much pressure?  Maybe the fuel gap is not properly venting?  Does the carb still leak if you remove the fuel cap?

Have you conducted a pop-off-pressure test on the carb?

QUESTION: Eric yeah mate cheked that, even with the fuelcap off it still leaks straight up thru the main jet, just like its got no needle in it at all?

Answer
Plastic or brass float?  Did you perform a pop-off pressure test?  I had a Mikuni carb once that had a pitted inlet needle seat causing the carb to leak.  Took for ever to isolate the problem and then took a dentist light to see the small pits.

If you Google "tecumseh carburetor pop off pressure"  you will find a lot of information.  One trick you can do to check the seat is squirt a little oil in the inlet needle seat and then check to see if it holds pressure.  If so, then you know something is suspect with the seat or needle.
