Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Scotts PTO issue, starter solenoid, alternator voltage regulator

Question
I have a Scotts Garden Tractor (100 hrs) Kohler engine
Family 2KHXS.725GC
Model CV725S
Command
(Hope thats the info you need)
Background: This machine sat in a open barn for over 3 years when I took possession of it.(a mouse kingdom).

When I engage the mower deck (PTO switch) the battery lite come on and draws down the battery (new last year,) after about 2 hours the battery is totally discharged.
I'm under the impression that perhaps the PTO clutch could be the culprit.

I saw a note to John Sr. from a Keith Littlejohn he was having a similar problem One of John's responses was that that indeed Scotts tractors were having similar type problem.

So my question is: How do I track down the problem or what do I look for?

When I stored the machine this Fall I charged the battery fully, then last week I started it. All was well, I didn't engage the PTO just seeing if the battery was good or not.

I hope I've given you enough and the proper info.

first you need to make sure that the battery does not have any weak cells, try a to install a different battery.

You might need to check the condition of your battery. Most auto parts places will do this for free. If it passes a load test, you'll also need to test the charging system to rule out the alternator/voltage regulator.

But before you do any of that, check the condition of the cable connections. A poor connection can cause a voltage drop. Chekc at the battery (both -ve and +ve), at the engine block ground, and at the starter and starter solenoid. Then check the smaller wires at the PTO solenoid/clutch. If they are all good, clean and tight, then pull the battery and load test it.

Likely it is the battery - an inexpensive fix you can do easily yourself.
