Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): briggs, engine model type, vanguard ohv

Question
QUESTION: I have an 7-8 hp briggs engine with a steel ring gear. I purchased a used 110v starter and changed the Pinion to a BS693713 However the teeth dont match! Is there more than one steel pinion or more than one 8 hp steel ring gear
Also the chamfer on the teeth of the pinion go opposite to what I think they should. Box is marked right but I am wondering if there is a clockwise pinion as well as a ccw! Looking down on pinion with chamfer side up the chamfer is on the right side of the teeth.
HELP!
Bob

ANSWER: What is the Briggs engine model, type and code number?

Almost all Briggs engines use the nylon starter pinion gear and metal flywheel ring gear.  The intent of the nylon pinion gear is for the pinion gear to wear out and not damage the ring gear.

How old is the engine?

is there more than one steel ring gear?
is there more than one steel pinion gear?

Answer
I have only seen a few metal pinions and they were on Vanguard OHV Industrial engines.  Do you have and L head Briggs engine?

Almost all L head engines from the 1960s-1990s had the model, type and code number stamped on the engine shroud, usually above the spark plug wire.

Can you attach a picture of the engine and flywheel?
