Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman Leaf Blower Wont Start, craftsman leaf blower, starter fluid

Question
QUESTION: I have a Craftsman leaf blower model number 358.797342 that won't start.  I have changed the spark plug and cleaned the air filter.  Now, if I spray starter fluid in the carb, after several pulls on the cord, it will start and run normally for as long as I use it.  I then shut it down and it won't start again.  What do I try next?  Thanks for any replies.

ANSWER: Is the choke working?  How old is the blower?  Has the carburetor ever been rebuilt?  Have you checked the engine compression?

Will it idle once you get it started?

Let me know.

QUESTION: The blower is several years old and yes the choke is working.  The carburetor has never been rebuilt and I have no way to check the compression.  Yes it will run at lower speeds once it warms up.

One thing I did notice is that when I press the primer bulb, no gas come out of the carburetor.  Shouldn't there be gas coming out?  I can see the gas running through the supply lines.

Also, can I take the carburetor apart and clean it myself, if that's the problem?

Answer
Yes, you can rebuild the carb yourself.  Take a look at the carb, the carb manufacturer name will be on the carb along with the carb model number.  You can download the repair manual online.

One tip with those blowers.  The o-ring on the back of the engine case is prone to leaking.  You can remove the back cover to access the o-ring.  Clean the are real well with part cleaner and then use some Permatex 2 non-hardening all around the o-ring to make sure it seals.
