Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Thrown Rod, engine model type, briggs stratton

Question
I have a simplicity mower with 12.5 Briggs & Stratton horizontal engine. I was told by the repair guy the engine had a thrown rod. Is there a replacement engine available that will not cost me an arm and a leg?

Answer
You could install a shortblock which is cheaper than a whole engine but the labor to transfer all the old engine parts to the new shortblock my cost more than a complete new engine.

Are you planning on having a repair shop do the work or were you looking to replace the engine yourself?

What is the engine model, type and code number?  I need the numbers to look up a replacement engine.

How old is the mower?  Is it worth a new engine?
