Jaguar Repair: 1986 XJS V12 ignition amplifier, lucas ab14, external amplifier

Question
Thank you for being a volunteer. I have a 1986 XJS V12. Driving down the highway it stalled and wouldn't start. I had it towed back home when I got there it started. Went about a mile or so and stoped. Long story short it won't even start now. I installed a new coil, however we think it maybe the Lucas ab14 ignition amplifier. It has power going in and coming out but I was told it should not be steady it should be switching on and off is this true and is there any way to test the amplifier b4 I spend $360.00 only to find out this is not the problem. I would appreciate your advise. Thank You

Answer
Hi Dave,
If you have the system with the external amplifier and you have power to BOTH coils and no spark, before you purchase a new amp be sure the air gap was correct between the reluctor and the pick-up, check with an ohm meter that you have a connection between the two wires running to the pick and wiggle the wires while testing to be sure of no broken wire as that was common. If the pick-up and it's lead are good, the only thing left is the amplifier.
let me know,
Howard
