Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Toro GTS 5, needle valve, fuel line

Question
My wife was mowing and shut it off and gas was leaking under the air filter. I removed the filter and it was badly dirty also I cleaned it with gas and am letting it dry. Do you think this was the problem or do I need to look elsewhere. also do you think I need a new filter? thanks

Answer
The gas was most likely coming from the carb. Make sure the fuel line is in good condition and is properly connected to the carb. If it is, then it would be a good idea to pull the carb and clean it. It may have debris inside holding the needle valve open, which will allow the carb to flood. It is also possible that you may have to replace the needle/seat, or the float may be cracked or not sitting properly. It should be just about level when the needle is closed.
