Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): mower wont start, common solutions, thrift store

Question
Just hours ago bought used Craftsman self-propelled mower at the thrift store.  Started first pull ran about 5 minutes (till I elected to stop the engine).  Got it home and now it won't start at all (didn't consult with my husband for this purchase, so now he is mad at me - no return policy).

The model number is 917.376583  I downloaded the Owner's Manual (doesn't help me much at all).  I can tell it needs a new air filter.  After some quick internet research, it seems that this may be a common problem for this mower.  Any suggestions on how to salvage my purchase?

Answer
Check the oil. There is a low oil sensor on the unit, and if the oil gets below a certain level, it will not allow it to run. It may also have a fuel shut off that would be located by the tank. If this is the case, it may have just ran on what fuel was in the carb at the time. These are two of the most common solutions. If this is not the case, let me know and we will go from there.

Good luck!
