Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Poulan Pro 295 Farm Hand Chainsaw, recoil spring, poulan pro 295

Question
I am fixing this chainsaw for my neighbour.  The pulley was stuck and wouldn't turn.  The pulley was damaged, however replacing it did not solve the problem.  After a couple of initial good starts the motor quit and when I attempted further restarts the motor would kick back and resist turning. When I pulled  a little harder, the pulley would jam and get caught with the pull cord all the way out until I shut the engine off. When I re-examined the new pulley, it was getting damaged the same way as the original pulley. Now I think that the problem wasn't the pulley after all and that there is something wrong with the engine's timing or other adjustments.  When I did get it running, it ran just fine and idled ok after warm up but did stall on a cold idle a few times.  I don't have a manual but I am looking for one now. I know Poulans aren't great chainsaws, so can you help or is it time to get a good one from Sthil or Husknavarna?  Thank you for your time.

Answer
I would replace the saw myself. I don't mean to sound rude, but Poulan's aren't really worth sinking a lot of money into, and this one sounds like it needs more work than it's worth. I assume you are talking about the recoil on it. Check to make sure that the recoil spring is working properly, if it is hanging up, that could be the cause of your problem.

Good luck! (Buy a Stihl!)
