Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Fuel in crankcase, air filter element, oil leaks

Question
Ben,

I have a Sears (Murray) 36" riding mower with Tecumseh Model# TMV220 Spec#127093F 10HP engine.

Tonight I noticed a runny oil puddle under the engine. From dipping the oil I could tell it was contaminated with gas with the mixture leaking from an unknown place.  I opened the air cleaner and noticed standing gasoline inside the air cleaner assembly.  I then noticed gas driping from the breather assembly.  I removed the breather assembly and a healthy quantity of gas and oil mistured poured out, with some still in the block.

Obviously, the oil is contaminated I need to drain and fresh fill, but the big question is what has failed to allow gas inside the engine, and how to fix?

Thanks in advance for your help.

The needle valve in your carburetor is stuck open.  Remove the carb, take apart and clean.  Use a wire from a twits tie to clean fuel and air passages.  Purchase a carburetor kit and install all the parts.  Install new gaskets and tighten all fastness.  Install new air filter element if the old one is oil or gas soaked.  Change oil, if you haven't and check for oil leaks.  Check dipstick seal and oil fill tube seal.  Check for hole in fuel pup pulse line. Anywhere air could be leaking into the crankcase.  This should fix the problem.
