Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 16.0 hp ohv briggs engine, metal shavings, compression gauge

Question
I have a 42" sears mower with a 16.0 ohv briggs engine. I was mowing and it sputtered a few seconds and then put out a big puff of white smoke. I tried to restart but it just turned over. I checked the oil and it is over filled with a gas smell to it. Is there any hope to repair this engine. Thanks in advance for your help.

Answer
Drain the oil and refill.  Does the engine sound like it has compression?  A compression gauge would tell you for sure.

You may have to remove the spark plugs if any of the oil/gas entered the cylinder and turn the engine over to clean out the cylinder.

When you drain the oil see if any metal shavings come out.

Have you ever worked on cars or lawnmowers?
