Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Snapper RER sr928, ohv engine, clutch cable

Question
I have recently aquired a Snapper SR928 RER mower with a few issues. Model #280914BE which I believe to be a 14 series mid-90's mower. The engine has been replaced with a Honda 11hp OHV engine that purrs and starts right up both electric or pull starts very easily. Not sure about engine model but it is stamped with GVX340-337.
My question is can I stand this engine up to service the mower?
Should I pull the Battery and drain the gas first?I'm having some drive issues and believe it to the drive pully, It doesn't want to take off but once moving it cruises. Also when trying to stop it just keeps rolling a little. There is a cable end hanging out the back I believe to be the brake/clutch cable. It has a cylinder type fitting on the end with a Tee fitting looks as though it should be held tight to the  shifter. Any way I need to get in there and tinker but never had a mower that needed to stand up before. Thanks in advance Jeremy

They are designed to be stood up but if I know I am going to be working a while I just drain the fuel, remove the tank, remove the battery and since I am that far I just go ahead and change the oil.

Have you ever replaced the rubber drive disc?
