Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): OLD craftsman 2 cycle 37.7cc backpack blower model #636.796912, compression gauge, stop screw

Question
I'm trying to get this old blower working, I put a little 25:1 gas/oil mix in tank and tried starting it began to leak out of cock body ass'y, so I replaced with new one I ordered on-line. the blower started up and ran ok then it stopped and has not been able to start again. I started messing with the throttle stop screw and now don't know what position it was in when it did start? Also leaking gas from carb, could float be bad? PLZ HELP,THX

Answer
I would start by checking compression with a compression gauge.  You need at least 90 PSI fo the engine to run.  If the compression is good check the ignition.  I you have spark then go to the carburetor.

I would replace the float and inlet needle at a minimum.

As for the throttle screw, if it is a tapered needle for adjusting air/fuel mix you start by turning it out 1 & 1/2 turns out from the gently seated position.  This the the rough, get it started setting.  Once running you can fine tune the carb.

Let me know what the compression is and if you have spark.
