Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Murray 40631A Belt routing, flat face, google

Question
Hello,

I recently acquired a Murray 12.5hp 40"cut, model #40631A. After cleaning the carburetor, replacing the spark plug, air filter and fresh fuel it started and run for a couple of weekends. Today the blades stopped spinning. I'd like to replace the belt but I'm not sure the present if the way the belt is routed is proper. Is there a diagram to show me the proper belt routing?

Thank you for your time,

Answer
About the only diagram available is the parts lists diagram but they are seldom that helpful.  An easy way to figure out the routing, once you have the correct belt part number, is just to match the belt to the pulleys.  If the pulley is a V style pulley then the V or inside of the betl rides in the V pulley.  If the pulley has a flat face then the flat or back part of the belt rides on the flat face of the pulley.

I am guessing your deck has 3 pulleys.  2 V pulleys and one flat pulley.  Starting at the engine, run the belt from the engine pulley to the first V pulley, usually on the left side of the mower if you were sitting on the mower.  Then run the belt to the next V pulley, on the other side of the deck.  Next is the idler pulley, usually a flat  face pulley.  Run the belt behind the flat face of the pulley.  Finally, the belt should run back to the engine.
