Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Polaris Ranger electrical short., oil pressure switch, ac volts

Question
I have a 2006 Polaris Ranger TM.  The TM is the model that has the 18hp Robin engine.  The only wires coming from the engine are a grey wire which is the "oil pressure switch", white wire is the "ground", yellow wire is the "battery", red wire is the "start", black/white wire is the "stop" and red "power" to the carburator.  While trying to start the engine I smelled something burning and found that the white "ground" wire had melted.  I replaced the wire and tried to start it again and had the same thing happen again.  I am having trouble figuring out why the ground is becoming energized when I try to start the unit.  Any insight would be helpful.

Answer
Hello Kable:

>>This will Usually Occur when the Stator/Charging Coil Shorts and Requires Replacing.
>>For Testing the Electrical (Charging) System on Mowers you can Use this Site Addy; http://engines.myfaqcenter.com/Answer.aspx?p_faqid=3438 and Use the Link for AC Volts/DC Amps Meter Setting Chart. This is for Briggs Engines and Works Well for Kohler, JD, Kawasaki, Tecumseh and Other Engine OEMs.
>>If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. I Hope you Had a Happy Holiday Season and May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.
