Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Maintenance on Toro Power Shift, friction wheel, serial number tag

Question
QUESTION: Hi-

Bought a Toro Power Shift snow blower (unknown vintage,I would guess mid 1990s as the guy I bought it from said he had it for 15 years)and would like to change all the fluids this spring. Engine oil is obvious but was about the transmission and the auger gear box. What types of oil/lube do I use? I see a drain/fill plug on the auger but nothing on the transmission. I cannot find a model/serial number tag but see where one should have been, the previous owner thought it is an 824?

Thanks,
Jim

ANSWER: Hello Jim:

>>You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Mower at this Site Addy, https://lookup3.toro.com/partdex/default.cfm and Select Start Parts Viewer. Now Enter the Model Numbers (38080) and Click Search. Now Select View Assembly Drawings for your Year Model.
>>The 824 is the Series Model, Not the Unit Model.
>>From 1979 to 1993 the Series 824 was a Model #38080.
>>From 1980 to 1990 the Series 824 was a Model #38085.
>>From 1994 to 1999 there was NO Series 824 Snowthrower.
>>I Used the 1990 Year Model for a Reference.
>>The Only Thing for the Drive (Traction) Section of this Unit is the Drive Chain and Friction Wheel.
>>I Usually Set the Unit Over a Section of Cardboard and then Spray the Chain with a Heavy Coating of Liquid Wrench and Allow it to Set for a Few Hours.
>>Now I Spray the Chain with Jig-a-Loo Spray Lubricant.
>>Also, Check the Friction Wheel (Metal Wheel with a Rubber Outer Surface) for Cracks and Chunks Missing.
>>If this Wheel is Damaged, the Unit May Operate Correctly for Now, but it is Just a Matter of Time before this Component will Require Replacing.
>>80W90 Gear Oil is Used in the Auger.
>>If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Have a Happy Holiday and May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.

QUESTION: Thanks for the quick answer. I tried looking up the model numbers and they look like they have fixed wheels. Mine, if you lift up an the handle while pushing the gear shift forward the wheels will swing either forward of backward to increase/decrease the amount of weight on the front (powershift?. Is this a different model number? Do you happen to know what model(s) it could be to help look for parts?

Thanks again,
Jim
