BMW Repair: will not start, fuel pump relay, 1992 bmw 325i

Question
I sprayed starting fluid into the intake to see if the engine would start before I pulled the spark plug and checked for a spark.  It did start and ran for a few seconds.  This led me to beleive that the engine was not getting any gas.  I then pulled the hose off the gas filter and turned the engine over to see if the gas pump was working.  No gas came out.  I then pulled the two gas lines exiting the gas tank to confirm my suspension and turned the engine over again.  no gas.  my question is:  1. Is the gas pump in the gas tank? if it is do i need to drop the tank to replace it?  2. Could there be a sensor / computer problem that could prevent the gas pump from working.  I have a 1992 BMW 325i.  thanks for your help.  -------------------------    Followup To    Question -   I have a 92 325.  I drove 1/8 of a mile, turned the engine off for 2 minutes and then the car would not re-start. The engine turned over but showed no sign of life.  Is there a design problem with the choke / fuel injector, when the engine does not get a chance to warm up?  I had a similar problem a few years ago and it self corrected after sitting a day or two. Any help/advice would be greatly appriciated.    Answer -   I would start by seeing if you have spark when you turn it over.Remove a plug to find out

Answer
Mike,
The fuel pump is located in the top of the gas tank, and can usually be accessed from under the rear seat.  I'm not 100% sure on the 1992's, but the previous cars could do this.

There should be an inspection plate beneath the seat, remove that and you will see the sending unit.  The pump is part of this sending unit.  before removing the sending unit I would make sure that it's the problem.  Take a multimeter and measure voltage going to the pump, while someone tries to start the car.  if you recieve 12 volts, then the pump is the problem.  If you are recieving no voltage, then it's likely the fuel pump relay.

 Hope this helps,
 Josh
