Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Rebuilding a Briggs and Stratton, briggs and stratton, valve clearances

Question
QUESTION: I have a B&S 5 hp motor off of a log splitter that I am trying to get running.  Model 132232 Type 4036-03 Code 90053109.  The compression tests out at 45-50. Is that enough or should I rebuild it?  If i rebuild it, do you have a service manual or know where to get one?  I have tried everywhere and I need step-by-step directions as I am not that good of a mechanic.

ANSWER: Hello Russ:

>>Instead of Rebuilding the Engine, have you Tried Re-Seating the Valves and Setting the Valve Clearances?
>>Usually with a Breakdown to Serve as a Guide, anyone can Disassemble and Assemble Most Small Engine with Common Automotive Tools.
>>A Valve Spring Tool is Required to Remove the Valve Spring Keepers from the Valves for Removal, but it is Not that Expensive (Usually about $20.00usd).
>>You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.outdoordistributors.com/parts.html and Select the B. Then Select Briggs and Stratton. Then Select Don't have Part Numbers. Then Select the File #13 . Then Select the Correct Folder #132200. **Note: you can Download and Save the Breakdown for your Engine by Selecting the 2nd Icon from the Left at the Top of the PDF page.**
>>You can Also Purchase a Repair Manual/Shop Manual for Briggs Engines from this Site using this Addy; http://www.outdoordistributors.com/briggs_and_stratton/briggs-manuals.html .

QUESTION: That is great.  However, which repair/shop manual do I need?  I really need one to list each step of the rebuild and/or each step needed to remove the valves, and I am not sure which one to chose.

Thanks,

Russ

Answer
Hello Again Russ:

>>The Following is an Example of Interpreting Date Code 6206282: The First Two Digits (62) Denote the Year of Manufacture. In this Case it is 1999. The next Two Digits (06) are the Month of the Year, which is June. The Following Two Digits (28) are the Day of the Month. In this Case the 28th. The Final One or Two Digits Designate the Plant and Assembly Line.
>>According to the Engine Code this Engine was Produced on May 31, 1990.
>>According to the Web Page, the Book you Require is B&S-270962A .
