Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Honda GX670 voltage check, amp meter, wheel horse

Question
Hi, I installed a GX670 replacement engine on my Wheel Horse and it appears that the engine is not charging correctly.  Additionally, I seem to have small drain on the electrical system as the battery goes flat over several days.  The charging circuit appears to be putting out about 12.77 volts. How do I check the rectifier and charge coil?  I need page 5-8 and 9-4 of the shop manual, but am too cheap at this point to buy the complete manual.  Can you help?  Thank you.

Answer
Hello Larry:

>>From your Description it Sounds like this Engine has the 3amp Charging Coil and Not the 20amp Charging Coil Under the Flywheel.
>>There are 2 Charging Coils Listed for this Engine.
>>One is a 12VDC/3amp Charging Coil (part #31630-ZJ1-003) and the Other is a 12VDC/20amp Charging Coil (part #31630-ZJ1-801).
>>The 12VDC/20amp Charging Coil has 3 Coils Connected together and the 12VDC/3amp Charging Coil is a Single Coil.
>>The Engine Block should be Drilled so Either Charging Coils can be Installed, Depending on the Engine Application and Amperage Requirements.
>>The 3amp Coil is Used for Powering Lights Only and will Not Properly Charge a Battery.
>>This May be the Reason for the Slow Discharge of the Battery.
>>Using an AMP Meter, Check the Amps that the Charging Coil is Producing before the Regulator (if Applicable).
>>If the Amp Meter Shows 3amps or Less, then
>>Remove the Flywheel and Inspect the Charging Coils.
>>If you have the 12VDC/3amp Charging Coil or if the Amp Meter is Showing Less than 15amps and you have the 20amp Charging Coil (usually has 3 coils and the 3amp is a Single Coil), then
>>You need to Replace either the 3amp Coil with the 12VDC/20amp Coils or Replace the 20amp Coils because of the Low Amperage shown on the Amp Meter.
>>You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.outdoordistributors.com/parts.html and Select the H. Then Select Honda. Then Select Don't have Part Numbers. Now Enter you Engine Model Numbers in the Space Provided and Click Search. Now  Select your Engine Breakdown for Online Viewing.  **Note: you can Download and Save the Breakdown for your Engine by Selecting the 2nd Icon from the Left at the Top of the PDF page.**
>>The Charging Coils are Shown on pg 66 of 218.
>>If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Have a Happy Holiday Season and May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.

Good Luck
