Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Duerr 675 Shredder, brass piece, copper wire

Question
QUESTION: Hi - I have a Duerr 675 shredded with a B&S 5hp 135212-0189-01 engine.  Engine would only run if I sprayed starting fluid directly into the carb, and it would only run for a couple seconds. I assumed dirty/clogged tube/screen, so I disassembled the carb from the block and the gas tank.  Cleaned off the screen (pretty clogged) and reassembled.  Now it will not start at all, even with starting fluid.  There is a copper wire, black insulation, very small gauge that is somehow hooked into the switch that controls "run" or "stop", I'm not sure that I reconnected this correctly.  Can you help with troubleshooting?
Thanks very much,
John

ANSWER: The wire hooks to the shutoff, there is a plastic mount with a piece of brass hooked to it and you push the brass back and put the wire through the hole so when you move the throttle lever to the stop position, it hits the brass piece and shuts off the spark.

QUESTION: Hi - thanks for the reply.  With the wire through the hole, or with it taken out and just dangling in mid air, the engine behaves exactly the same.  Would you have any troubleshooting steps I could take to diagnose the problem?
Thanks,
John

ANSWER: The other end of the wire should be connected to the coil on a spade connector. If it is and it does'nt kill the spark when grounded then the stud on the coil is no good and the only way to fix this is replace the coil.

QUESTION: Hi - thank you, I guess I should have been a bit more specific about "the engine behaves exactly the same".  What I should have said was, with the wire connected or disconnected, the engine will not start at all, not even with starting fluid in the carb.  Would you have a diagram that shows all the correct linkage hookups?

Answer
I'm sorry, I guess I didn't read back and see it wouldn't start. Unfortunately I know of no pictures which show exact linkage orientation. This is also a problem for new technicians as the only way to find out the correct positions are to guess right or have an experienced tech. show you.
