Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 96 kawasaki fd590v on JD 345, kawasaki motor, mail check

Question
QUESTION: Do you know or can you find out what kind of thread is on the temperature sensor on the left side of the motor towards the front under the radiator? I bought a trailtech vapor tachometer and temperature sensor. The water temp sensor that came with it normally installs in the radiator hose, but was too small. I can get a bigger one, but don't want to pay $40 more dollars for one. The trailtech sensor is 1/8" bspp. The opening on the kawasaki motor is 3/8", but I can't seem to get anything to thread into it. I ordered a 1/8th" bspp to 3/8th" bspp adapter. The sensor threaded right into the 1/8" opening. However, the adapter will not thread into the opening on the block. It seems like the outside diameter of the threads are a mere fraction of a milimeter too wide. Can you figure what is going on here?

ANSWER: Hello Kevin:

>>Sorry for the Delay.
>>I Checked with Kawasaki and Confirm the 1/8"bspp Threads for the Sensor. I Just Recieved the Answering E-mail.
>>Check the Adapter you Purchased and Make Sure that it is the Correct Size.
>>You may have Purchased a MM Adapter which is Slightly Larger than Standard and will cause the Problem you Described.
>>The Standard Size Fitting is Slightly Smaller than MM Fitting and this will Allow the Sensor to Thread into the Adapter, but Not Allow the Adaptor to Thread into the Engine.
>>If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I Hope to be Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.

Good Luck

QUESTION: Well, I hit a deadend. I called the place where I purchased the adaptor
and the guy didn't know anything about MM compared to standard
British Pipe Thread. I got some numbers off of the OEM sensor and they
are: MM3 and 111-ON. For clarity, is the port on the kawasaki block
british standard pipe parallel? British standard pipe tapered? Or is it a
completely different thread? I tried regular pipe thread and it doesn't fit.
I am kinda surprised at how difficult it is to figure out what thread
pattern is on this thing. I know the aftermarket sensor is bspp, just
having a nightmare trying to figure what size and thread pattern fits into
that port. It has to be 3/8th" OD because 1/8th" less would make it way
too small. Any further help would be appreciated. Thanks again.

Answer
Hello Again Kevin:

>>The MM3 Markings Usually mean the Sensor Threads are Metric here in the US.
>>I have again Contacted Kawasaki and it will be Monday before I will Recieve a Response.
>>I will Send you a Follow Up then. If you Fail to Hear from me, Please send me a Reminder Question.
>>Sometimes I have Trouble Locating Past Questions that I am Doing Research for.

Hi Kevin:

>>I Just Spoke with one of the Mechanics in the Shop and he said the Threads on the Sensor are Metric Tapered. Apparently we had this Same Problem a Few Months ago and it was Never brought to my Attention because they Worked it out themselves.
>>I haven't Gotten a Response from Kawasaki yet, but will Send you their Answer as soon as I do.
>>Thanks.
