Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): gas trimmer, straight shaft, drive shaft

Question
i have a toro straight shaft gas trimmer. the last time it wasn't running as smoothly as it usually does. when i shut it off there was a little rattle coming from the engine. i noticed that when i turned the head it wouldnt turn freely without turning the whole drive shaft. it also seems harder to pull the starter cord. what do you suggest?

Answer
I would guess that the spring on the clutch broke, causing the clutch to be engaged all the time. This makes it hard to start the engine as the unit is designed to idle without the pull of the shaft/head on it. I suggest if you want to repair it, you should take it apart where the shaft enters the engine. You should be able to see the clutch by removing the cover located there.
