Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): kawasaki pull rope, foot rope, rope 2

Question
2 mechanics disagree, My 14 hp fcv 420 kawasaki motor had a 5 foot pull rope, for 8 years, lately a mechanic put a 10 ft. 6in. pull rope on it, and it was 35-40% smaller in diameter also, The scag dealer says could be problem, other mechanic says, no way, after 3 pulls rope comes out, broke both new pawls and pulley and I had a new spring, guide, and new pulley  Mechanic still says the long rope in no problem and will not honor his work, he says smaller diameter rope and long rope is no problem, he has 31 yrs. of experience.  So i bought the whole housing with all parts loaded from kawasaki and again the rope is only 5 feet long, and i have no problems,  Any opinions?? Thanks.

Answer
The only thing I can tell you is a longer rope will allow you to overtension the spring. If you have a 5 foot rope, it puts some tension on the spring, a 10 foot rope can overtension the spring since it rotates the pulley double the amount of the 5 foot one. Any mechanic who will not stand behind the work he does isn't worth going back to, sorry you had this experience. One thing he may not be able to accept is we ALL make mistakes, no matter how much experience you have.
