Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Toro Lawnmower Model # 20070, toro coil

Question
Hi,
I have a mower that will not stop running. I changed the kill switch but the problem remains . When I release the shutoff lever the engine boggs down a little bit but remains running until I pull the spark plaug wire. What else could be causing this. Thanks

Answer
The kill wire may have come off the coil.  You'll need to pull the flywheel housing off to check.  The kill wire should be attached to the little spade clip on the coil.  Something else that may have happened is whatever actually grounds that kill wire may be bent or out of adjustment.  While you have the flywheel housing off, follow that black kill wire to where it clips on to the grounding spot.  Usually it's on the speed control bracket.  Have someone work the shutoff so you can see how it makes contact.  Then you'll be able to see if it's connecting or not.

Sometimes a coil can have an internal problem that causes this. This isn't very often though.
