Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): coil on briggs, briggs and stratton, cast iron engines

Question
QUESTION: I have briggs cast iron engine (326431 type 0139-01) that lost fire. I narrowed it down to bad coil. I rigged a car coil to the battery and points and it fired off and ran ok. Will this be ok? Or should I replace with original coil? Some guys are removing points and using different kind off coil. witch way should I go and why? thanks

ANSWER: I would save money and continue to use the car coil.  If the car coil fails then you may consider upgrading to electronic ignition.  However, some of those cast iron engines have reversed flywheel magnets and may not be suited for some electronic ignition kits.

What are the first two digits of the code number?

ANSWER: Please attach a picuture of your ignition system set-up including the coil, flywheel, and points and condenser.

I looked up your model and type number and the diagram does not show an auto style coil.

QUESTION: Someone else added a condenser already.  The extra wires are going to the car coil.

Answer
Briggs and Stratton 398811 Armature-Magneto
((Electronic Ignition Used After 81)

Briggs and Stratton 298968 Armature-Magneto
((Breaker Ignition for points Used Before 81)

Can you send a picture of the car type coil?  I'm currious, because I have seen the car type coils on cast iron Briggs engines, but all the parts diagrams do not show a car type coil for your engine.
