Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 14 horse kohler engine k321aqs, john deere, clutch

i have a 1983 ,i think,314 john Deere with a 14 horse k321aqs engine.i was mowing the other day we i began to smell something burning,smoke started to come from out under the hood around the front left side,i turned off the engine and let it cool for awhile,maybe 45 minutes,then i got back on it and tried to crank it,it would turn over but would not crank,i think it might be the clutch on front of the engine but it turns free,have you got any suggestions?

I would recommend you start by checking for spark.  The manual describes how to identify which system you have, points or breakerless.
