Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Scotts L2548 48, correct tension, mower deck

Question
QUESTION: Was mowing along when the mower stopped mowing, turned out belt came off.   We put the belt back on per the book around all the pulleys.. but it seems a little on the loose side.  When we tried to engage it, nothing happens.  Any ideas ?

ANSWER: Checked the owner's manual and it shows an electric PTO along with an idler pulley on the mower deck for tensioning the belt.

Have you checked the ilder pulley to make it is placing the correct tension on the belt?  Does the book you have mention anything about tightening the mower belt?

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Eric,  Just a follow up that it turns out it was a Missing Spring!   we did replace the belt, but that didn't fix the problem, and didn't see anywhere to tightening the belt.

So trucked it down to the repairman and luckily he saw the problem right off the bat and it was a $6 part. phew!   Book doesn't mention or show any spring....

Thanks again for your quick response!

Answer
Often times it is the little things that are the hardest ones to fix.  I have to say the lawn and garden industry have very poor documentaion, repair manuals.  The lack of manuals is understandable since most mowers only last 5-10 years...it would be pretty expensive to add all the details for every model. Manufactures expect you to either attend their schools every few years plus attend/take annaul seminars regarding repair procedures for the latest models. Glad to hear it was an easy fix.
