Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Peerless Transaxle, twin cylinder engine, peerless transaxle

Question
I have an older model Murrey lawn tractor built in 1999. It has a 205-024C Peerless transaxle with some serious functional issues. When moving foward, the more you push on the pedal, the louder the transaxle gets and the fwd speed is very slow. In reverse,it is loud, not as bad but not right. I have researched replacing this transaxle but, it is very expensive. Price range from 400.00 to 620.00 plus shipping. Hardly worth fixing it since the mover is so old but, it has a Briggs 20hp IC twin cylinder engine that runs exceptionally well and the rest of the machine is very usable. Can parts be obtained for this transaxle? I have not been able to find any. Do you have any idea where I might find a used replacement or an alternate replacement transaxle? Can I disassemble this unit and repair what is wrong? Alot of questions at once but, as you can tell I have been looking around alot online for parts, replacements, etc.
If I am able to do a teardown, is their a manual available for it from Peerless or another company? Any help would be much appreciated.

Answer
Google "Peerless Motion Drive" and you will find the manual but it maily covers standard shift transaxles.  It briefly metions hydro units but does not go into detail.

Unfortunately the parts diagrams I looked up only contained externaly parts...nothing internal.  The factory schools are not much help either.  Basically the rule of thumb they tell up it to replace the unit with a new one and send in the old one.

You can swap out gear boxes but it is a lot of work...it's easier to replace the oil tranaxle.  I Googled your tranmission model number and found several links where folks repaired their units.  Have you tried any of the tractor message boards?
