Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): GX 95, transmission gear box, john deere sx95

Question
I have a GX 95 riding mower that I put in reverse on a small hill and then there was a clanking noise. The engine runs but there is a load clank every couple of seconds. When put in gear it jerks. Could this be a broken gear or key.

Before exploring the gear box you need to make sure the main drive chain and axle are not the problem.  All these part are external to the transmission gear box.  If the chain and axle are fine then I'd check the transmission gear box.  FYI, I have found a lot of broken chains inside the gear box.  It's not a difficult task but takes some time to replace.  Make sure to read the manual in the link provided above before messing with the transmission.
