Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): engines stops when hot, spark plug wire, kohlerengines

Question
QUESTION: I have a Kohler 15 HP engine on a rider, YKHXS.4262GB, After about a 1/2 hr, apx. engine slows down and dies out. Will not restart til it cools down? Any suggestions? Oil level ok, and spark plug looks ok.

ANSWER: Have you replaced the spark plug?  I have had plugs cause this problem.

If you go to Kohler's website, http://www.kohlerengines.com/home.htm , you can download the full service manual.

How old is the engine?  When was the last time the valves were checked?

Let me know.

QUESTION: Spark plug was replaced, and properly gapped. Was told by a service tech where I was working, he said he figured it to be the ignition modudale, as did a teacher in my Power Equipment class. I have already downloaded the service manual. Changed oil today, and will try it out again.

Answer
I have had a few ignition modules fail but you need to be certain before shelling out big bucks for a new module.  Do you have an inline spark tester to verify spark?

I would recommend isolating the mower wire harness from the module to verify some other part is not causing the problem.  This is easy to do, just dis-connect the small wire connect to the ignition coil.  NOTE, you will not be able to shut-off the mower with the "kill" wire disconnected from the coil.  You can install a temporary switch, remove the spark plug wire or choke the engine to shut it off.  I prefer the temporary switch.
