Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Peerless Transaxle problems, peerless transaxle, simplicity tractor

Question
Hello,

I have a 12 hp Simplicity tractor with a Peerless 801-019C transaxle.  The number on the i.d. tag below 801-019C is 7055 5978.

I think my transaxle is shot.  It is not driving the axles, but the drive belt is turning the shaft, so I figure something must be broken inside the Peerless.

I wanted to check the transaxle fluid level and see if adding some would help any, but the manual does not mention anything about checking or adding transaxle fluid.  I don't know if this transaxle can be serviced, I don't see any fluid drain plug, and the only thing that I can figure is the fill plug on top has a 'neutral start switch' attached to the top of it.  Is this the fill plug?  Should I open this and add fluid and see if it helps.  If so, should I add 80w90 gear oil or a multi-purpose hydraulic/transmission oil?  The parts manual says multi-purpose hydraulic oil for all bevel gear cases.  Is this Peerless a bevel gear case?  I know for a lot of these they use the 80W90 oil.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!!

Regards,
Marc

Answer
Hello Marc:

>>Sorry for the Delay. My PC Crashed and it Took a while to get it Up and Going again.
>>From your Description it Sounds like the Chain Inside the Transaxle has Broken or there is Another Internal Problem with the Transaxle.
>>You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Transaxle at this Site Addy, http://www.outdoordistributors.com/ and Select the P. Then Select Peerless. Then Select "Don't have Part Numbers? Click Here". Then Select the Series Transaxle (801). Then Select the Transaxle File for your Transaxle (801-801-19C).
>>Adding 80W90 Gear Oil will Not Help Correct this Problem.
>>This is a Gear Drive Transaxle.
>>If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I Hope to be Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.

Good Luck
