Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): John Deere L110 Lawn Mower Shearing Flywheel Keys, john deere l110, old john deere

Question
I have a 5 yr old John Deere L110 Lawn Mower.  Recently while I was mowing thick grass the mower bogged down and stopped running.  I was able to get it started to drive it back to the shed but it ran poorly.  Now it will not start at all, backfires, and shows no signs of compression.  I have dismantled the flywheel and discovered the key was sheared.  The funny this is that I did not have to use a flywheel puller... I've replaced the key twice and the mower starts and runs fine, no problems, until I start mowing and the first sign of any kind of thicker grass the mower immediately quits.  Both times I have opened everything back up and determined it was the flywheel key again.  Is it possible that I need a heavier duty flywheel key or is there some other issue I should check for?  Any  help is greatly appreciated!  Thanks.

Answer
Hello Scott:

>>From your Description it Sounds like the Flywheel Nut/Starter Clutch Requires More Torque.
>>The Torque should be as Much as 125 Foot Pounds.
>>I Usually Torque the Flywheel Nuts to 125 Foot Pounds and the Starter Clutches at 100 Foot Pounds.
>>Does the Crankshaft or Inside the Flywheel Mating Surface Look Damaged?
>>Did you put the Washer on the Correct Way?
>>Usually the Washer is a Convex/Concave Washer and it is Installed Center Up.
>>You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Engine and Mower at this Site Addy, http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.H... and Enter the Model Numbers L110 and Click Find. Then Select your Model from the Search Results Area. Then Select the Sectional File. Then Select the Section of the Mower you Wish to View Online. *You can Drag the View Windows for Better Viewing.*
>>If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I Hope to be Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.

Good Luck
