Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Toro 56145 - 8-32 Mower Popping out of reverse, spark plug wire, shift linkage

Question
John,

First let me say thanks for taking the time to answer questions for everyone on here!

I have a old Toro mower, Model 56145, which is a 8 horsepower - 32" cut deck on it.  It also has the peerless 700a transmission on it.

Recently I've had issues with the transmission which prevents me from putting the gear selector in reverse sometimes.  If I'm on a hill trying to get the mower in reverse, the gear shifter keeps popping out of reverse, most times it won't even go into reverse at all.  I figured it was the shift linkage, so I replaced the shift gate, shift handle, and the bushing that goes between the shift lever and transmission.  Unfortunately the transmission is still clicking when I put it in reverse.  The only way I can get it into reverse is by being on flat land or by rolling down a hill backwards (no pressure required to get it into reverse).

Like I mentioned, I just replaced all the linkage about a month ago, and ended up the chain in the transmission broke.  I took it to a friend and there were several gears that were beyond worn.  He had a spare that he pulled off another mower that was in much better shape.  We put that on however it doesn't fix the problem.

My guess is it's something in the linkage that's allowing it to pop out of reverse and that's not allowing to go into reverse sometimes.

Today I noticed that when I grab the shift lever at the bottom of the lever, it doesn't do it as bad, however I still have to hold it in reverse while going in reverse, otherwise it pops out.  Like I said, it's a brand new shift lever.  I've noticed it does have a little flex in it around where the spacer bushing goes through and bolts to the transmission shift lever.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Hello Mike:

>>THINK SAFETY: Always Remove the Spark Plug Wire/s from the Spark Plug/s and Tie Away from the Spark before Working on Any Small Engine unless the Plug/s must be Connected to the Coil/s for Diagnostic Reasons.
>>You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Mower at this Site Addy, https://lookup3.toro.com/partdex/default.cfm and Select Start Parts Viewer. Now Enter the Model Numbers (56145) and Click Search. Now Select View Assembly Drawings for your Year Model.
>>Can the Transaxle be Shifted into Reverse by Hand at the Transaxle itself. ***Be Careful when Performing this Test. Block Up the Unit and Anchor it so the Unit WILL NOT MOVE if you Do Not have Assistance.** Disconnect the Shift Lever WA'B (#9) from the Shift Lever (#27) and then With Someone Sitting on the Unit and Operating the Clutch/Brake, Carefully try Shifting the Shift Lever (#27) into Reverse.
>>Usually the cause for this Problem is the Shift Keys Inside the Transaxle are Worn and Require Replacing, the Shift Lever (#27) is Worn (Usually can be Seen where the Shift Lever Attaches to the Transaxle Shift Rod) and Requires Replacing or the Transaxle Shift Rod is Worn and Allowing the Shift Lever (#27) to Pivot Slightly on the Shift Rod.
