Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Briggs engine with new magnetron coil, new plug, starting fluid in carb and still doenst start, recoil spring, transmission oil

Question
Hi, I have an older briggs engine (on a tiller) I just bought in a in a non-starting condition. Model 100202, type 401020, serial 6205170

Plug is new, I just switched to a magnetron coil from the old points and condenser, still no spark, no start.

Prior to installing the magnetron I'd sanded the points briefly and was able to get a second or two of promising sputtering with a lot of squealing. Since then I've put some Automatic transmission oil on the clutch (spindle?) and on the recoil spring to deal with the sqeal and help with cord recoil.

What's the next thing to suspect? I would have thought that a the new magnetron and plug would at least get me some spark. Possibly a grounding issue?

Thanks,
Scott

Yes your a are correct, I would go back to the new coil and make sure that the wire is ran to a shut off switch and that it is not in the off position or shorted to ground. The wire from the coil is a wire that gets grounded when you want to kill the power to the engine.Find out where that wire is and make sure it is not disconnected. You also can pull the wire off the coil and then try to start it the only problem you can't shut it off with the switch you will have to ground that out.
