Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Points and condenser, briggs stratton, mounting brackets

Question
Hi, first of all Jeffery I'd like to thank you for your time doing this and AllExperts for this site. My question is this; I have a 4 year old Murray lawn mower with a Briggs & Stratton 4.5 hp engine model 10H902-0522-E1. I have no spark rocking the flywheel magnets across infront of the magneto. The spark plug is fine. I do not see a points set in B&S's parts breakdown for this engine so I am guessing that is a magneto/armature/coil? The only wires coming off of it are the spark plug and kill switch. Is there a way to check it off the engine and/or with a voltage or ohms meter? Thanks again! Kris

Answer
It depends, you can check continuity from the arature to the mounting brackets.
If you have continuity then it has an internal short as is shorting to ground.
Make sure that you kill switch isn't shorting out and preventing the engine from starting. I have seen this happen more than once.
Check your plug wire for any shorts also.
Let me know what you find out and we can go from there.
if you would please rate my answer, Thanks
