Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): john deere stx38 not starting, coil tester, john deere stx38

Question
I have a john deere stx38 model# CV12.5S, Spec# 1270, Ser# 240110538. It started to not get spark after it warmed up. If you let it cool it would start to spark and run. Now it sparks one minute(even when cold)and then quits. Not sure if coil bad, ingintion bad or ???    thanks for the help.  Jim

Answer
Hello Jim:

>>Usually the Igniter is the Cause for No Fire under the Conditions you Listed.
>>However, lately there have been a Few Bad Coils on the JD and Other OEM Engines.
>>I have been Suggesting you have the Igniter and Coils Checked by JD, but some of the Questioners are having Problems doing this.
>>I Suggest you Remove the Coil and take it to your Local Small Engine Service Center that has Access to a Coil Tester. If the Coil Test Good, then Purchase the Igniter from JD.
>>You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Engine and Mower at this Site Addy, http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.H... and Enter the Model Numbers STX38 and Click Find. Then Select your Model from the Search Results Area. Then Select the Sectional File. Then Select the Section of the Mower you Wish to View Online. *You can Drag the View Windows for Better Viewing.*
>>Also, if the Coil is Bad, then Don't be Surprised if the Igniter is Bad Also.
>>If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I Hope to be Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.

Good Luck
