Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): mower having a hard time running after start, briggs and stratton, hp briggs

my 12.5 hp briggs and stratton riding mower died on me a couple days ago and it wouldnt hold charge. i replaced the battery and now it starts but when i had it running for about 20 mins yesterday it could barely keep running. i had to pull the choke out to keep it idling. can you give me some suggestions? im thinking it could be my fuel filter but not entirely sure. thank you so much.

yes  drain and clean out tank and replace fuel filter , check tank cap breather so tank can breath , remove float bowl and clean jets and nozzles and openings in carb and replace plug
reassemble  and test

check flow from tank to carb  spark and compression are  all  a o k
