Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman Garden Tractor No. 917.258863. 18.5 hp Kohler Engine, 30 amp fuse, ac volts

Question
QUESTION: Looking for troubleshooting information or possible causes to this:
The tractor starts then blows the 30 Amp Fuse after running for a couple of minutes or less. I have checked the electrical connections I know about, replaced the Solenoid and cleaned the battery terminals.  Same result.  Any information you can provide will be appreciated. Kohler Engine Model No. CV20PS-61555.

ANSWER: Hello Steve:

>>Have you Checked the Stator/Charging Coils/Alternator for Overcharging?
>>You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select the Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM (Kohler) and Enter the Model and Spec Numbers (CV20). Then Double Click on your Model in the Results Area. Now you can Select the Section of the Engine you Wish to View.
>>Most of the CV20 Engines have a Voltage Regulator. From your Description it Sounds like the Regulator is Bad and Allowing the Stator/Charging Coils to Overcharge and Blow the Fuse.
>>For Testing the Electrical (Charging) System on Mowers you can Use this Site Addy; http://engines.myfaqcenter.com/Answer.aspx?p_faqid=3438 and Use the Link for AC Volts/DC Amps Meter Setting Chart. This is for Briggs Engines and Works Well for Kohler and Other Engine OEMs.
>>If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I Hope to be Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.

Good Luck

QUESTION: It appears the documentation on the engine was inaccurate.  It is actually a Kohler Model CV18S Type 61555.  I did not find it at the site you recommended.  I also did not find a reference to a Voltage Regulator in the documentation.  Any further troubleshooting information you can provide will be appreciated.

Answer
Hello Again Steve:

>>You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select the Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM (Kohler) and Enter the Model and Spec Numbers (CV18-6155). Then Double Click on the Model in the Results Area. Now you can Select the Section of the Engine you Wish to View.
>>The Regulator/Rectifier is Shown as #18 in the Breakdown. If the Engine has a Different Charging System that Does Not use the Regulator/Rectifier, then the Stator is Shorted and Requires Replacing.
>>If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I Hope to be Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.
