Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): briggs 31G777-0192-E1, bolt holes, electric clutch

Question
I found that my engine has a hole blasted in the side.  Now I am looking for some information to find out what engines interchange directly.  There are other 31G777 engines for sale for around $400 but I am not sure if they are a direct interchange.  Is there an interchange application online or chart somewhere?  Thank you.

Answer
hi scott

1st  you need to know  hp rating,  in this case its  17 .5 hp  ohv
then wether its electric start or rewind ,  then its muffler position and  engine  to chassis mounting holes  position and size , then  pto shaft length and diameter
and is the pto take off a manual clutch or electric clutch
then may need to think about wiring connections from loom to engine ( most can be adapted or made to fit )  and the engine length, width, hieght if fitted in enclosed housing

(old engine size  is 19.08 inchs  long,-- 15.2 inches wide,-- 12.4 inches high)

if you have seen other engines around with same hp rating ,pto  length , size and electric start
with oil filter and full pressure lubrication  and engine mount bolt holes positions  they should fit as long as specs as above match but if was a slightly higher hp rating ie (18.5 hp ) that would be a good thing

would pay to view engine 1st and compare dimensions etc  before purchase

as far as interchange info chart  have not seen one  ?

but always pays to replace engine withcompatable engine as to what was removed and at least same size hp rating or better  so you wont run into fittment / equipment issues

cheers hope it helps
