Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftman woodchipper engine, tecumseh engine, engine model

Question
Hi John, I wonder if you can help me, My 8HP Crafstman wood chipper engine developed a knocking sound last fall and I shut it off right away. Now I took it apart for inspection to see if there is a problem. Everything looks normal %26 unless I find something, I will probably re-assemble it.
I will replace the usual parts like gaskets and seals.
Dummy me I took the crank out without looking for timing marks for the valves  but I am sure there are some on the gears.
I wonder if you can tell me who makes the engine, I looked all over and all I can find is a Craftsman sticker with the model number 143.978005.
Sears parts central has some gaskets listed but the case gasket is on back order. Wonder if I could get a gasket set from an other source?
your help will be much appreciated

Answer
Hello Jurgen:

>>The Knocking May have been the Rod (connects to the crankshaft and piston) or the Unit may have been Low on Oil.
>>The 143.978005 is a Tecumseh Engine Model Number.
You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.outdoordistributors.com/ and Select the S. Then Select Sears. Then Select 143. Now Select Don't have Part Numbers. Then Enter the Model Numbers 143.978005. This is the Model Number of your Engine. Then Select your Model and Download the File for Online Viewing.
>>You can Also Order Parts from this Site if Required.
>>If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.

Good Luck
