Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Kawasaki Engine, kawasaki engines, kawasaki engine

Question
QUESTION: I have a Craftsman mower with a Kawasaki FD590V-AS07 water cooled engine. I don't have a owners manual. What weight motor oil should I use .

ANSWER: hi Ed

i would use  10w /40  this gives good protection down to - 20 celsius and good protection right up to 50 celsius

you can use sae 30 weight oil  if expected temp is in the range
of 0 celsius  and 50 celsius,  or  32 f and 122f  but not any lower than 0 celsius

please find web site for parts diagrams and numbers etc

QUESTION: What is the procedure for adjusting the govenor?

ANSWER: hi
find the link rod that connects the governor arm to carburettor throttle shaft
with the engine stopped move the governor link from fully closed throttle to fully open
and note the direction the governor arm  moved  while moving from fully closed  to fully open
ie  counter clockwise or clockwise ?  once stablished correct direction ,loosen gov shaft loc nut and hold throttle plate @ full open , and turn governor shaft in the the direction noted  above  ( this proceedure identiies direction to move shaft and places  governor cup in correct  no load position and removes any slack from wear ) tighten loc nut

basically when engine is running governor is trying to close throttle plate and when its shutting down the closing force from the governor cup / spool is removed and the throttle is allowed to go to full open

this is why we use  the above proceedure to identify direction of movement of the governor arm
from movememnt from full closed to full open

QUESTION: Thank you so much for your help. The information has been outstanding. I have one last question. There is a small tube about 16" long that comes off of the top left side of the carburetor. Not sure if it's vacuum or fuel but I can't find a port to hook the other end to. Can anyone help.

Thanks again for all of your help.

Ed

Answer
HI ED

LEFT SIDE OF CARB AS VIEWD FROM SITTING ON TRACTOR  OR  FROM THE FRONT OF ENGINE

IF LEFT SIDE OF CARB AS VIEWD FROM SITTING ON SEAT , AND ITS A SMALL DIAMETER HOSE
IT WILL BE A BREATHER / BOWL VENT HOSE   AND MY BE THAT LONG SO AS THE END GETS NORMAL ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE TO FLOAT BOWL AND NOT  PRESSUREIZED AIR FROM BLOWER FAN ON ENGINE WHICH MIGHT CAUSE A PRESSURIZED FLOAT BOWL AND CAUSE RICHER  RUNNING

OR IT MAY BE A OVERFLOW TUBE IN CASE OF CARB FLOODING

TO CHECK THIS CONNECT TO THE PORT AND UNDO THE DRAIN BOWL SCREW IF FUEL COMES OUT  ITS A OVERFLOW  DRAIN HOSE ,  IF NOT ITS A BOWL VENT  HOSE
