Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Kohler engine, head gasket, piston ring

Question
If oil is coming out from between the head and the block this means not only blown head gasket but also bad rings? Is that correct?
(10hp Kohler motor

Answer
hi kevin    PLEASE NOTE     - WEBSITE

HERE IS KOHLER WEB SITE FOR INFO

WWW.KOHLERPLUS.COM    ENTER AS GUEST   , THEN FIND YOUR ENGINE K  SERIES   AND THEN FIND K241
GO FROM THERE  YOU CAN DOWNLOAD SERVICE DOCS ETC  AND MANUAL     COOL  .

generally if oil is comming out of gasketed joint @ head to block   - blown head gasket would be indicated, and is usually due to  o/heating and or loss of tensile  strength of the cyl head bolts , as to rings  once you have the cyl head off  you will see if there is any ridge or lip at the top of ring travel if there is  the bore will have wear similar to a bell  ie  wider @ top than at bottom , note if any  scoring , gaulling or o/heating marks on bore

if any of these are present ie  big ridge @ top end of ring travel or scoring or pitting, gaulling o/heating  damage   would advise  new rings and piston  if piston is @ service limit.

IF NO  RIDGE & hone bore up  if it will  clean up with no marks deep enough to catch a finger nail  to make good use of new std piston / ring kit and course cyl head gasket

BUT IF A BIG RIDGE &  DAMAGED SCORED  BORE BEYOND A SERVICE LIMIT    WOULD ADVISE REBORE & O/S PISTON / RING  SET

note if decide to fit new piston  and rings c/case will need to be opened up to remove  conrod bolts   this  would entail a engine rebuild gasket set

can you let me know exactly what model and spec number the 10 hp kohler engine is

i suspect ?  K241  ?

cheers  let me know   paul
