Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): low compression, magnum, replacement engine

Kohler Magnum MV16S Spec# 56521 - Very hard to start & requires carb cleaner to get it running.  Runs poorly -low power. Diagnosed as having low compression and not an overhaul candidate by local repair facility.  What is your professional opinion on overhauling this engine?

It will be an expensive engine to overhaul. but not that big of a deal.  It may be a little intimidating for an experienced technician.  What type of application is it on? What is the cost of a new replacement engine?  Cost of short block?  Take a look at these items then decide.  Send me a followup if i can be of more help
