Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 6hp Briggs & Stratton, correct model number, briggs and stratton

Question
QUESTION: Hi, I have a 6hp Briggs and Stratton on a 1971 Allis Chalmers Homesteader 6 lawn tractor. When the engine is first started it blows white/gray smoke for 30 seconds and then clears up. The cylinder has a few shallow scratches and no ridge at the top. The cranckcase breather has been replaced also. It uses alttle to no oil. This is a replacment engine on the tractor as the original 6hp blew the rod. Model 144702 Type 1031-01 Code 66050501.

ANSWER: Is that the correct model number and code number?  I tried looking up the engine model and could not find anything with that model number.

If so, it is a 1966 engine and will most likely use a little oil.  You could rebuilt, bore cylinder, replace rod, valves, and valve guides if you are doing a restoration.  The other option it to just check the oil, as should be done, every time you use the tractor.

Cool old tractor...are you planning on keeping it?

QUESTION: Yes i'm keeping it. Fun little tractor to mow the grass with. I called Briggs and Stratton and they said it's normal for the alumnum cylinder engines to use a little oil.

Answer
Not a big surprise to use a little oil for it's age.  Cool picture! Someday I'd like to have an old, well built tractor to restore; Massey, Allis or even an old Ford. I suppose I would use it some but mainly I'd like to have it painted and place on display.

I'm still interested in the engine model number.  Why isn't the illustrated parts list available on Briggs website?
