Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Briggs Engine, fuel leaks, carby

Question
I have a Briggs 18HP I/C Model: 422707 Type: 1263 01
Code:9403095B
While mowing a few days back the engine quit running as if it ran out of fuel.  I try to crank it and it will not start until I sprayed fuel into the throat of the carb.  When that fuel burnt out it quit again.  After several times of the same process over, I decided it must have a bad fuel pump.  I took out the old pump, there was fuel at the pump, and cleaned the inside the best I could without taking the carb off. I then installed the new fuel pump and tried cranking again and the same thing it will only run when I spray fuel in the throat of the card. I can see no fuel leaks anywhere. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Answer
hi   billy

sounds like when you ran out of gas  might have got some gunk in the carby  often happens

clean tank out ,  clean/ clear fuel hose - then refill tan see if  good flow from tank to pump
disconnect  line from pump to carb - crank engine over should have good flow

everything being =  with good compression , spark  and at right time   sounds like a fuel problem

remove carby , make note of spring and link  positions  clean and clear all  jets and passages inside  carb with crc and blow compressed air  through them ,  do not use any wire  it will damage them , make sure main jet is not blocked and  float is shutting off fuel flow
reassemble carb  and refit

remember  F  A  C  T  S      all 5 needed for engine to run

F  = Fuel
A  = Air
C  = Compression
T  = Timming
S  = Spark

hope this helps    cheers paul
