Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): McCulloch PM 380 gas chain saw, starter rope, followup responses

Question
QUESTION: Hello ! Older chain saw given to me , have used it before with no problems. This time after freeing the chain from a branch that I was attempting to cut when it got stuck, after letting it cool down a few minutes, the engine fires and  turns over but the chain and assembly does not move. Need some tips on what to look for and where, and what could possibly be done. Thanks very much for your attention.

ANSWER: hi bobby

firstly does the engine run fine without the chain and bar on  - y / n- does bar oil come out from pump at a good rate ?

does the drum / sprocket turn when clutch is spinning at rev   y / n

if you answer yes to both of thses  , then i would assume you have twisted the bar groove  or bend the bar or even damaged the tip  or  the chain is twisted / damaged drive links etc
sounds like you have ust damaged the chain and or bar  ?

check this and let me know

cheers paul

QUESTION: h
Hello ! Thanks very much for your responses. The engine runs fine w/o chain and bar.the bar oil is coming out,I do not know if the rate is good or not,( not qualified ).The drum and or sprocket does not turn at all. When you accelerate the engine with the trigger, nothing moves or turns. There is no action. As stated above and before , the saw worked fine prior to this instance.I am mechanically inclined , but will not go any further than to expose the drum/ sprocket assembly until i am sure that this is the right direction in which to go.Any further advice or tips based on my followup responses would be appreciated. Thanks again. Stay well !!

Answer
hi

if the drum is not moving  and the engine  runs and revs  it could be the clutch is faulty or worn out or the crankshaft end for the clutch is stripped ?

try taking the clutch off  -  it is a l/h thread  undo it turning the clutch to the r/h
loc the crankshaft to stop movement - with a piston stop   you could use a thick piece of nylon starter rope   placed through plug hole and piston rotated up to it and being held in between cyl head and piston

cant quite remember if clutch was a bolted type or threaded on type  ?

the only other possiblity is the clutch side of the crankshaft has  snapped forward of the  r/h oil seal  and oil pump    which effectivly lets the engine run and output oil  but no  drive to clutch?     sounds like thas may have happend
