Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Honda EM2200X Generator, carburetor cleaners, throttle shaft

Question
Hi how are you?I just picked up a Honda EM2200X Generator. When I went to check it out the gentleman started it up on the first pull it ran great no issues etc.I got it home & it was a little dirty so I decided to clean it up a bit.I used Mineral Spirits & Carb cleaner.(The outside was a little grimy/greasy)I did all this(Now I did not touch the Carb at all as far as turning or messing with the-Throttle Screw,Governer,Idle/Air Screw)I slid the choke to the left "closed" position I pulled it once & it started right up..After a little bit I went to slide the choke to the "Open" position & now it wants to idle high.I checked everything out that I can see & do not notice anything wrong.I also put a new air cleaner on.The plug looks good.Does the Carb all of a sudden need to come apart?I had a issue with the carb on my riding lawn mower that after awhile of not running it the fuel gummed up & clogged the carb-so of course I took it all apart & cleaned it & it runs great now. This is just throwing me for a loop.Any help would be awesome!I need to use this NOW!!!!Thanks!Steve.

Answer
Hi Steve,

When your engine is surging or running unevenly, this usually is significant.

Check the fuel cap to ensure it is venting.  If you haven't already replace the air filter or clean it.  Check the carburetor (or overhaul the carb).  Note, that carburetor cleaners are known to be overly harsh and can possibly cause damage to the rubber rings, be very careful with the cleaners.

Check the engine R.P.M. Check the linkages, the governor shaft, the throttle shaft.  Check the ignition module operation using a gap type tester.  Check for an intermittent spark, incorrect spark plug, or a fouled condition.

My instincts say it is the carburetor, but you will have to do the testing to find out.

Good luck,

Howard
